Can Adults Get Orthodontic Treatment?

Why do adults seek Orthodontic treatment?
‍
Adults seek orthodontic treatment for a variety of reasons. Some want to straighten crooked or crowded teeth, while others may have concerns about their bite, tooth wear or difficulties cleaning between their teeth. Teeth can also shift throughout adulthood, particularly if retainers haven’t been worn consistently following previous orthodontic treatment.

Straightening your teeth can improve the appearance of your smile, help improve your bite and make it easier to maintain good oral hygiene. In some cases, orthodontic treatment can also form part of a wider dental treatment plan to support long-term oral health.

What are the treatment options for adults?

There are several orthodontic options available for adults, depending on your individual needs, lifestyle and treatment goals.

Traditional braces: Fixed metal braces are a reliable and versatile option for treating a wide range of orthodontic problems.
‍
Ceramic braces: These work in a similar way to metal braces but use tooth-coloured or less noticeable brackets, making them a more discreet option.

Clear aligners:
Systems such as Invisalign or Angel Aligners use a series of removable, transparent aligners to gradually move teeth. They are popular with adults who prefer a less noticeable option and the flexibility of removing their aligners for eating and brushing.

Not every treatment option is suitable for every case. Our Specialist Orthodontist, Dr James Millar can assess your teeth and bite to recommend the most appropriate approach.

What Should Adults Consider Before Starting Treatment?

1. The health of your teeth and gums
Healthy teeth and gums are essential before beginning orthodontic treatment. Adults may be more likely to have existing dental restorations, gum recession, periodontal disease or previous dental work that needs consideration. Any active tooth decay or gum disease should be addressed before treatment begins. James will assess your oral health and may liaise with your general dentist if additional care is needed.

2. Existing dental work
Crowns, bridges, implants and other restorations can influence orthodontic treatment planning. For example, dental implants cannot be moved in the same way as natural teeth. James will consider any existing dental work when developing a personalised treatment plan.
‍
3. Treatment time and commitment

Treatment duration varies depending on the complexity of your case and the type of appliance used. Many adult treatments take around 12–24 months, although some cases may be shorter or longer. Fixed braces require regular appointments and careful cleaning, while clear aligners generally need to be worn for 20–22 hours per day to achieve the intended results.
‍
4. Lifestyle and appearance

Consider how orthodontic treatment may fit into your work, social life and daily routine. Clear aligners and ceramic braces can offer more discreet alternatives to traditional metal braces. However, all options require commitment, good oral hygiene and regular orthodontic reviews.
‍
5. Retainers after treatment
Once your teeth have been straightened, retainers are essential to help maintain your results. Teeth naturally tend to shift over time, so following your retainer instructions is an important part of long-term success.
‍
Is There an Age Limit for Braces?

‍
There is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment. As long as your teeth and supporting gums are healthy enough, you may be able to benefit from braces or clear aligners well into adulthood. While adult treatment may require additional planning due to existing dental conditions or previous dental work, healthy teeth can be moved at any age. James is currently treating a couple of patients in their 70s!
